Over the course of three months in the spring of 2011, Jesse served as documentarian on a civic arts initiative produced by EnJoy Productions and Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. “Voices of the City” aimed to encourage dialogue between regular citizens from all walks of life and demographics in the city of Tacoma, Washington.
Jesse attended each of the six workshops as a (mostly) silent participant. Often, she sat at the foot of the artists and photographed the process with little or no interaction other than the soft “click” of her shutter, garnering a level of invisibility which accounts for the intimate glimpse at the group finding its way toward discovering their unique – and collective – voices.
The following represents selected images from the workshop creation process as well as a promotional short film produced by Jesse for the Fall Free For all Festival, October, 2011. The film and images were part of a central display, presented in conjunction with the other Voices of the City participants offerings over the course of the two-day city arts celebration.
